Summer Hair Extensions Survival Guide: How to Keep Your Extensions Looking Beautiful All Season Long

Summer is one of our favorite times of year—but it can be one of the toughest seasons on hair extensions.

Between pool days, beach vacations, sunscreen, humidity, and extra time in the sun, extensions often need a little extra TLC to stay soft, bright, and beautiful. The good news? With a few simple habits, you can protect your investment and enjoy gorgeous hair all summer long.

At Kim Harper Salon, we want your extensions to look just as amazing in August as they did the day they were installed. Here are our top summer extension care tips.

1. Be Careful With Sunscreen

This is the number one summer extension mistake we see.

Many sunscreens contain ingredients such as avobenzone that can react with minerals found in water and cause blonde extensions to develop a peach, pink, or orange tint. Unfortunately, this discoloration can be difficult—or sometimes impossible—to remove.

Extension-friendly sunscreens we recommend:

  • Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40

  • EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46

  • Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield

  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Sunscreen

  • Mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are generally the safest choice around blonde extensions.

Application Tip:

Apply sunscreen before getting dressed and before your hair touches your shoulders, neck, or back. Allow it to fully absorb before letting your hair down.

2. Protect Your Hair Before Swimming

Chlorine, saltwater, and lake water can all dry out extension hair because extensions don't receive natural oils from your scalp.

Before swimming:

  • Thoroughly saturate your hair with clean water.

  • Apply a leave-in conditioner through mid-lengths and ends.

  • Braid your hair if possible.

  • Wear a swim cap for maximum protection during extended swimming.

Think of extensions like a sponge—the more fresh water they absorb beforehand, the less chlorinated or salt water they can absorb.

3. Never Sleep With Wet Extensions

Summer often means late nights, vacations, and showering right before bed.

One of the quickest ways to damage extensions is sleeping with them damp.

Before bed:

  • Ensure extension attachment points are completely dry.

  • Dry the roots thoroughly.

  • Secure hair in a loose braid or low ponytail.

  • Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to minimize friction.

This helps prevent tangling, matting, and unnecessary stress on your natural hair.

4. Use the Right Brush

Not all brushes are extension-safe.

Traditional brushes can snag attachment points and cause unnecessary shedding or breakage.

Wet Brush Pro Flex Dry

Olivia Garden Fingerbrush

Denman D38 Power Paddle

Brushing Tips:

  • Hold the hair at the root while brushing.

  • Start at the ends and work upward.

  • Brush at least 2–3 times daily.

  • Pay special attention to the nape of the neck, where summer sweat and sunscreen can cause tangling.

5. Add Moisture More Often

Sun exposure, heat styling, pool chemicals, and saltwater can leave extensions feeling dry faster than your natural hair.

During summer, we recommend:

  • Using a professional moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

  • Applying leave-in conditioner daily.

  • Using a lightweight hair oil on mid-lengths and ends.

  • Scheduling regular conditioning treatments.

A little extra hydration goes a long way toward extending the life of your extensions.

6. Schedule a Maintenance Visit Before Vacation

If you're traveling this summer, don't wait until your extensions are overdue.

A maintenance appointment before vacation allows us to:

  • Check attachment points

  • Move up grown-out extensions

  • Remove tangles before they become problematic

  • Ensure everything is secure for swimming, boating, and travel

You'll enjoy your trip much more knowing your hair is ready for whatever summer brings.

7. Protect Hair From UV Damage

Just like your skin, extension hair can suffer from sun exposure.

Too much UV exposure can:

  • Fade color

  • Dry out the hair

  • Create unwanted brassiness

  • Shorten the lifespan of extensions

Simple solutions include:

  • Wearing a wide-brim hat

  • Using a UV-protective hair product

  • Keeping hair braided during long days outdoors

Your future self (and your extensions) will thank you.

8. Don't Ignore Tangles

Summer activities naturally create more friction and tangling.

If you notice:

  • Small knots near attachment points

  • Increased shedding

  • Areas that feel matted

Address them immediately.

A few minutes of brushing each day can prevent a minor tangle from becoming a major maintenance appointment later.

The Bottom Line

Hair extensions are an investment—and with the right summer care, they can stay soft, healthy, and beautiful for months.

Protect them from sunscreen transfer, keep them hydrated, brush with extension-safe tools, and don't skip your maintenance appointments. A little extra care now helps preserve both the appearance of your extensions and the health of your natural hair underneath.
